Mask 2 carving by John collins
John Collins' masks illustrate the ancient art of 'Ta Moko' - facial tatoo. The exterior 'skin' of the mask is punctuated by cutaway sections with different carving.
These cutaway sections show that behind each person is a long line of others, sometimes known, but often hidden.
Hand carved in coastal Southland from New Zealand Kauri wood, stained and inlaid with Paua shell. Dimensions 475 x 230 mm ( 18 6/8 x 9 inches ).
