Geoff Rankin

Geoff Rankin attended Sydney's National Art School in the 1960's, developing an interest in, and eventually settling on sculpture as his chosen art form.
His art practice moved geographically from Australia to New Zealand, with his lifelong interest in natural minerals and stone leading him to become involved with lapidary organizations along the way.
Geoff has fantastic resource of materials to work with. Apart from natural stone, he also managed to obtain industrial glass from Auckland manufactories that ceased operation.
At his Auckland workshop he pursues pure sculptural forms in opaque and translucent materials, his individual pieces complimentary to each other grouped in visual dialogue.

Art making process

Geoff Rankin uses the reductive sculpture technique in his practice, removing material from solid a mass by various means.
Holding the rough material by hand, he brings it to grinding wheels to achieve initial form, before finishing the surface smooth with increasingly fine abrasives.
His finished sculptures are without base, front or rear faces, enabling them to be placed in various ways.
