Neil Hanna

Neil Hanna has been designing and hand making distinctly original jewellery in Auckland since 1971.
A childhood interest in archaeology led him to develop knowledge and understanding of the material culture of Aotearoa New Zealand, and he continues the tradition of working local materials such as stone and shell in jewellery and occasionally sculpture.
Neil has published two books, about Pounamu and Kapia (New Zealand Nephrite Jade and Kauri Gum respectively).
He is also one of the carvers featured in Donn Salt's 'Stone, Bone and Jade' publications.
Gallery Pacific has showcased his work over the last four decades, having initially established a relationship with him during the 1970's.

Artistic process

Neil Hanna's practice involves disciplines relating to lapidary (working of stone), sculpture, and jewellery making.
His work often involves fitting together several components of natural materials that he has sculpted or cut by hand.
By this method he achieves curvaceous sculptural pendants full of energy and movement.
Another of his series relies on the precise 'intarsia' technique, whereby stone and shell is cut precisely and inlaid to form pattern or suggest a picture.
His work is always signed to the reverse.
