Rangi Redman
Jack 'Rangi' Redman was an Auckland based wood carver whose career spanned six decades. He came to carving following has return from World War 2, receiving instruction, then developing a passion and ability to carve fine work. We knew him personally, having established a relationship with him during the 1970's, and have offered his work for sale over a period of 40 years. His distinct carvings are mostly in Kauri wood, beautifully hand finished, and signed with his 'R' motif.
Art making process
Rangi Redman's home based workshop housed an impressive collection of treasured wood working tools obtained over his lifetime. He carved on a dedicated bench that he purchased from Europe during travels early in his career.
Kauri timber for carving was carefully selected and stored, although he also worked in other native New Zealand timbers.
After hand carving with chisels, he used scrapers to remove the tool marks in his work, an extra step resulting an an entirely smooth finish.
The last stage was to rub a wax mixture he prepared himself into the bare timber, giving it the golden glow Kauri is known for.
