$20,000.00
'WHAI' pair of Stingray carvings by John Collins. Free hand carved in New Zealand Kauri wood, stained in two tones, inlaid with Paua Shell. Mounted on engineered stainless steel stands that allow two way angle adjustment - side to side, and front to back. Approximate dimensions of Stingrays are 550 x 550 x 80mm each ( 22 x 22 x 3 inches ). Approximate overall height of each Stingray on stand is 700mm ( 24 inches ).
Completed in Aotearoa New Zealand's Southland region, within sight and sound of the ocean. WHAI can often be seen around our coastal waters, and feature in Maori culture as Kaitiaki (graceful guardians) of shellfish beds, and the ocean itself. They are auspicious throughout the South Pacific, where they are woven into traditions relating to the sea.
John Collins' fine surface carving further develops the fluid form of these creatures. Their wings shimmer with spirals evocative of the movement of water.
They exude a powerful though calm presence.
